Located in a beautiful 18th Century building you'll be knocked-out by the quaintness of this restaurant. Entering through Max's Tavern, you'll find a charming setting with several tables and a small bar. Proceeding to your left is a hallway that leads to two formal dining rooms, each with its own fireplace. The food is excellent. Think farm-to-table meets comfort food, with some ethnic twists here and there. A great experience all around. The Barnard Inn has no guest rooms. Cell service is sketchy in Barnard, but the Inn has their own cell tower (so to speak, it runs off their wifi) provided by AT&T. You can ask to be connected.
It's really rare to get great food, with great service in a perfectly relaxing and pleasing atmosphere but Max's Tavern at the Barnard Inn delivered on all of that during a lovely meal that my husband and I enjoyed there on a Tuesday night. From the chilled buttermilk cucumber and watermelon wasabi soups to the delicious local chevre and strawberry arugula salad to the monkfish to dessert, everything was divine. My husband says that his avocado and shaved chocolate ice cream is the best dessert he's ever had and, while I thought I was too full for the carrot cake, it turned out to be the perfect thing with piped dollops of cream cheese frosting rather than a big thick coating. Thanks to the great wait staff as well - you made our night by seating us at a perfect table by the window to the rose garden and serving us graciously and efficiently!
Food amazing. Pond to walk around. Great vibe and friendly staff.
Very comfortable atmosphere, amazing food, a place you can see current and old friends and make new friends too! Definitely a need to experience restaurant... several options await you!
Really nice place. Interesting menu of tasty dishes and friendly atmosphere. Welcoming staff and beautiful location.
A lovely place. Wonderfully diverse menu; thoughtfully presented. A gifted chef.
Absolutely delicious! Very personable service.
Lovely location with truly delicious food. Vinny, our server was efficient, funny and never overbearing. Highly recommend!
One of our favorite places! Fabulous food and fantastic staff.
We were staying about 5 minutes away and this was the only place to grab a bite to eat and we were pleasantly surprised. The Inn is rustic and cozy and the food was fantastic. Even my 3 year old's chicken fingers were remarkable. They have a great local bar menu and diverse food menu to please anyone. We are marking this one as one to go back to.

I hate writing a bad review but I felt like we were ripped off. We attended the Valentine's 5-course dinner and were sorely disappointed. The waitress, while very nice, talked us into a bottle of wine that turned out being $70. The appetizer I got was 3 small soggy oysters. The salad was pretty good but very tiny. The main course which was schnitzel was basically fried chicken (very good chicken) but was not what I expected in terms of Wiener or Yaegerschnizel. It came with mashed potatoes. Final bill: $286.00. I did leave a tip (less than that) but accidentally took both the merchant and customer receipts with me. Absent the slip, the owner took the liberty to increase the tip to $50.00. Unbelievable. I was actually hungry leaving this restaurant after spending almost $300.00!
We had our wedding at the Barnard Inn on 10/5/19. Everything exceeded our expectations. The venue was absolutely magical at peak fall foliage and our pictures are amazing. Will and Corinna worked with us to personalize our menu and drinks. The food was spectacular and our guests are still raving about it. Our event went off without any problems due to Corinna's meticulous attention to details. This was a perfect wedding venue!
Friendly staff and nice people who own it. Food is delicious
Everything on the menu is spectacular. Plenty of gluten free options. If you are in the area call to confirm that days hours and prepare yourself for a fantastic meal.
Delicious... cozy... perfect...
Hit and miss. I ordered the Wienerschnitzel and it was fantastic; my wife ordered the steak and it was worse than any home-cooked steak I've had (very rubbery and chewy). Even the French fries were soggy and tasteless--how do you mess up French fries? People with allergies, don't come here--the waitstaff/chef refused to make any substitutions even though my wife was allergic to the side included with her meal and the only explanation was "the chef won't budge." Our waiter was nice and professional but seemed borderline afraid of the chef, which was concerning. The menu was incorrect on a number of things, which made the ordering process take way too long as we had to figure out what actually came with each dish. Overall, not worth the 5 minute drive from our Airbnb. Very overpriced for what we got (except my Wienerschnitzel).
